What inspired you to become a staging professional?
I have always loved interiors ! Who knows why? When I was a little girl I was always drawing pictures of houses as if you were looking into them with the roof lifted off…and drawing the furniture placement the way I thought it should be. I didn’t read many comic books but I could be content for hours paging through a copy of Veranda or House Beautiful at my grandmother’s house. It’s stayed with me all through the years….I still love to look at beautiful interiors and create stunning living spaces!
Finally in 2006, I left my long career in Oncology Nursing to pursue my heart’s desire …I became certified an an ASP ( Accredited Staging Professional ) and started my own company, ROOM SERVICE STAGING. I’ve never looked back and have never been happier! This business has been very good to me.
What do you love about your job?
I love the surprise and gratitude of my clients when I enable them to see their homes as they never dreamed they could be. It’s wonderful to part of the process of helping people move forward in their lives ! Contact with many different types of people closely mimics my nursing career and I love it.
Do you have a favorite experience that you could share with us?
The most gratifying experience by far was being part of a volunteer group of ASP Staging Professionals who transformed the RONALD MC DONALD HOUSE for the families of critically ill children whose families reside there while their children are patients at Children’s Hospital. We all donated our time ,as well as staging accessories and art ,and we staged all the common areas…the dining area, the “family” room, the computer/communications center, the library, the TV area…It was so satisfying to know that we helped to ease the anxiety and stress of having a gravely ill loved one by adding some beauty, functionality and serenity to their experience. I’ll never forget it.
What about a least favorite — any horror stories?
One of my first staging jobs was a couple who had been in their home 27 years ( can you say “clutter” ?) and owned a Great Dane who was like a child to them.
Unfortunately his dog house (which was only slightly smaller than theirs) was positioned on the patio right in front of the large windows that overlooked their beautiful backyard and mature trees.
It took all my skills of diplomacy to convince them that it had to be moved for the duration of the sale of their home. In the end they came to understand the reasons for my decision and we enlisted several strong men to ease it around the corner, out of sight of the family room. I finished staging the house on a Wednesday evening and it sold two days later on Friday morning…for full price and before it was even in MLS!! The best part is that they asked me to stage their new home for living!
What is your favorite type of house to stage?
I love them all…the variety is what makes staging so interesting and fun!
What sets you apart from the competition?
I have an ironclad commitment to client satisfaction and a critical eye for detail…I’m not happy until the clients (Realtor and seller) are satisfied. And I make it a point to include a bit of elegant whimsy in every home I stage…because life should make you smile !
What is your favorite Colorado restaurant?
We have a Christmas tradition of watching the shoppers and lovers and families hurry through the swirling snow outside from the w
arm interior of Las Margarita’s on Downing while we savor the mushroom& spinach quesadillas and a big Margarita by the fire. For big occasions, nothing beats Flagstaff House in Boulder!
What is the last movie that you watched?
A Single Man with Colin Firth
What is playing in your ipod right now?
Boz Skaggs…the best!
